Dolby Atmos is the technology that allows the reproduction of sounds in three-dimensional space. In order for this to happen, a concert auditorium is equipped with a large number of speakers (up to 64 - depending on its size) which are - almost - all independent of each other and are placed not only in front of and around the auditorium (as in other 5.1 & 7.1 sound systems) but also on the roof.

The placement of all the speakers around the perimeter, at a certain inclination & angle, is a necessary condition for the absolute sound effect.

The main feature of Dolby Atmos technology is that the sound is no longer limited to a specific channel/channels (as is the case with six-channel -5.1- or eight-channel -7.1- sound systems) but is reproduced at points in the three-dimensional space, thus enabling the sound designers to determine where they want a sound object to come from, in which space it moves and where it ends.

The Atmos system in turn is the one that will interpret the data and always in relation to how an auditorium is configured will direct the sound object to the speaker that corresponds to the specific point of the 3D space.

In this way the end result is achieved, the feeling that the sound is coming from everywhere and not just around our ears.
